Understanding NDIS Eligibility in Australia

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports Australians living with a permanent or significant disability by providing access to funded services that promote independence, wellbeing, and participation in everyday life.

Who Can Access NDIS Funding?

You may be eligible for NDIS support if you meet all four of the following criteria:

1. Disability or Early Intervention Requirements

You must either:

Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to carry out daily activities, work, study, or participate in the community
OR
Be a child under 6 years of age with a developmental delay, or a person who would benefit from early intervention support to reduce future needs

The NDIS commonly supports people with:

Intellectual disabilities
Physical impairments
Neurological conditions
Psychosocial (mental health) disabilities
Autism spectrum disorder
Sensory impairments (vision or hearing)

2. Residency Requirements

To access the NDIS, you must be:

An Australian citizen, or
A Permanent Visa holder, or
A New Zealand citizen holding a Protected Special Category Visa (SCV)

3. Living in an NDIS-Eligible Area

The NDIS is available Australia-wide.
If you live in Australia where the NDIS has been rolled out, you are eligible to apply.

4. Age Requirement

You must be under 65 years of age at the time of applying for the NDIS.

If you are already receiving disability support before turning 65, your services may continue through alternative government programs. People over 65 generally access support through the Aged Care system instead of the NDIS.
